Agents rarely act in the real world today.
Not because they lack intelligence, but because they lack trust.
A human may be willing to ask an AI for advice. But letting it call a bank, negotiate with a service provider, rebook a flight, dispute a charge, or coordinate care for a parent is different. At that point, the agent is no longer answering. It is representing.
That creates two trust problems.
First, the world needs to trust the agent. If a business receives a call, how does it know whether the voice is real, spoofed, synthetic, fraudulent, or authorized? How does it know who the agent represents, what it is allowed to do, and whether the human behind it has actually consented?
Second, the human needs to trust the agent. To act well, the agent needs context: preferences, history, constraints, relationships, risk tolerance, calendar, payment rules, escalation rules, and judgment about when to stop. Without that, delegation feels unsafe.
This is why today's agent activity is still narrow. We accept agents when they help us draft, search, summarize, or automate controlled workflows. We are much less ready to accept them when they show up on the other side of a phone call claiming to act for someone else.
Real-world systems were not built for this.
Businesses were built to serve humans, apps, and scripted bots, not autonomous representatives carrying human intent at machine speed.
That means agents are becoming a new class of user. They will need identity, permissions, history, reputation, reachability, limits, audit trails, and ways to be trusted.
And when agents become users, networks built for humans will need to change.
